Breed Bio: A Profile of the Doberman

Loyal, highly intelligent and easy to train, the Doberman has served a wide variety of roles in society over the years.

The architect of the breed was Karl Louis Friedrich Dobermann, a German tax collector. Fearing the dangers of his profession, Dobermann sought to create a muscular, loyal and dedicated canine companion to accompany him on his tax collecting excursions.

While they served Louis well, the dogs he created were by no means the pointy-eared Doberman we know and love today.

The breed was later refined by Otto Goeller, president of the German National Doberman Club. Geoller worked tirelessly, using what he described as a "cocktail of dogs" to refine the breed into a sleeker, medium-sized dog capable of performing virtually any job asked of them.

The modern-day Doberman continues the legacy of its namesake, providing loyalty, protection, and comfort to adoring families all over the world.
